East Blue Hill Stories
East Blue Hill’s seventh annual evening of storytelling will feature true Moth-style stories on the theme “Good idea at the time.” A cross-country move. A grand gesture. A business venture with a friend. These are stories of bold beginnings — choices that felt right in the moment, and maybe, just maybe, still are.
If you are interested in telling a story, please contact Lizzie Peabody, ebhstories@gmail.com, by August 11 to discuss your idea.
East Blue Hill Stories will be held at Founders Hall in East Blue Hill.
Fire Prevention Event
The Blue Hill Fire Department will address what homeowners and property owners can do to prevent forest fires and to protect homes if fires threaten their neighborhood. Fires that have started accidentally on properties in Blue Hall in recent years have burned several acres and some out-buildings; some may have been avoided with different management of landscapes and closely wooded lots. The Blue Hill Fire Department will make a presentation and also tell about efforts to become more pro-active on the entire Peninsula.
Party in the Park with Flash! In the Pans
Come join us in the East Blue Hill Park on Curtis Cove Road for a night of steel drum music, food, and fun!
On Monday, August 11, the East Blue Hill Library will host a “Party in the Park” event featuring the popular steel drum band Flash! In the Pans at the East Blue Hill village park. Back for the third consecutive year, this family-friendly, alcohol-free event is a chance to gather and dance for a good cause. Beginning at 6:30 p.m., hot food, desserts, and drinks will be available for purchase. The pan dance will start at 7:00 p.m. and last until 8:30p.m.
Based in Blue Hill, Maine, FLASH! is one of the largest community steelbands in the United States. Formed in 1990, members of FLASH! find as much joy in playing the steel drum (known as pan) as they do in sharing their music with enthusiastic audiences of all ages, from infants to centenarians.
Half of gate proceeds will support the East Blue Hill Library, with the other half supporting Flash. Suggested minimum donation is $5 per person.

Author Event: Fiona Davis & Greg Wands
Novelist Fiona Davis is on the New York Times bestseller list for the second time with The Stolen Queen. She is the wildly popular author of eight historical fiction novels set in iconic New York City buildings, including The Chelsea Girls, The Magnolia Palace, and The Lions of Fifth Avenue, which was a Good Morning America book club pick.
She first came to New York as an actress but fell in love with writing after getting a master's degree at Columbia Journalism School. Her work has appeared in The Wall Street Journal, in O, The Oprah Magazine, and elsewhere, and her books have been translated into over twenty languages.
She also fell in love with fellow writer Greg Wands. It helps that they write in slightly different genres: Davis in historical fiction and Wands in thrillers. They bounce ideas off one another as they work on their respective manuscripts, and co-wrote an audio novella, The Gimlet Slip, that came out last summer.
Greg Wands is the internationally bestselling co-author, along with Elizabeth Keenan, of three thriller novels under the pen name E.G. Scott, the first of which (The Woman Inside) was optioned for television. Their books have been translated into a dozen languages and their latest title, Trust Issues, is now available in the East Blue HiIl Library. He is currently at work on a solo novel.
Author Event: In Conversation with Greg Wands & Jonathan Lethem
Jonathan Lethem is an essayist and the author of thirteen novels, including Motherless Brooklyn, The Fortress of Solitude, and Brooklyn Crime Novel. His stories and essays have been published in The New Yorker, Harper's, Rolling Stone, and many other magazines and anthologies, and his writings have gained him a National Book Critic's Circle Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship, a World Fantasy Award, and a 2005 MacArthur "Genius" Fellowship. His forthcoming book, out this September, is A Different Kind of Tension: New and Selected Stories.
Jonathan divides his time between Los Angeles where he teaches writing at Pomona College and his home in East Blue Hill. He will be talking with crime novelist Greg Wands who has been coming here most of his adult life visiting his father, the late Richard Wands.
